Acrylic on Canvas, 40" wide X 30" tall
Status: Sold Man, this one seemed to take forEVER. I tend to do paintings of places I've actually seen with my own eyes more easily because I'm less reliant on photographic detail. Alas, I've never been to Tuscany. Anyway, this is a commission piece. The aspects I wanted to emphasize were Guinigi Tower (that tower with the trees on top), the Passionist Convent (bluish dome in the background), the layers of mountains, and some kind of jumbled sense of roofs and trees - so many lines going this way and that! Oh, and I was also trying to blend in with a high-contrast decorating scheme (whites and creams against a lot of rich browns). Hm. Don't think I managed the restraint required for that. There ended up being quite a bit of red in there, after all. I can never control myself with color. When I started this one, I thought about giving it a Renaissance / Art Deco feel. To me, that meant pale sky against a darker, more dramatic foreground and metallic highlights. This is how it ended up. Source photo is here. |

The way the roofs flow like the mountain range give the whole piece a sort of gentle roll and tumble. There is such a sense of warmth and soothing.
