Acrylic on Canvas, 40" wide X 30" tall
Status: Sold

Man, this one seemed to take forEVER. I tend to do paintings of places I've actually seen with my own eyes more easily because I'm less reliant on photographic detail. Alas, I've never been to Tuscany.

Anyway, this is a commission piece. The aspects I wanted to emphasize were Guinigi Tower (that tower with the trees on top), the Passionist Convent (bluish dome in the background), the layers of mountains, and some kind of jumbled sense of roofs and trees - so many lines going this way and that! Oh, and I was also trying to blend in with a high-contrast decorating scheme (whites and creams against a lot of rich browns). Hm. Don't think I managed the restraint required for that. There ended up being quite a bit of red in there, after all. I can never control myself with color.

When I started this one, I thought about giving it a Renaissance / Art Deco feel. To me, that meant pale sky against a darker, more dramatic foreground and metallic highlights. This is how it ended up.

Terracotta is a tricky earth colour to capture as it is based on the geographical area it was excavated from, so there can be very many variations of hue, just like a colour pallet. Also the light from the mediterranean can be very strong and throw crisp cut shadows across the landscape, a bit like a chrystal throws light passing through it across the living room wall, especially through the trees.

Thisis because of a mixture of the winds, the mists of the sea and the often humid moist conditions that constantly fluctuate beneath the clear turquiose sky.

A lovely painting.

Thank you - that makes me feel a lot better about it, because honestly, I tend to stick to stuff I know. I once said "I've never seen Tuscany, I bet it's beautiful, but a Tuscan landscape will not have the same pull for me that a Vancouver or an Okanagan or a Kamloops landscape would have if done in the same style." (quoting myself, how sad). So here I am painting Tuscany without ever having seen it. It worried me. I looked at a ton of internet videos and fretted. Ultimately, you draw on what you know and hope it all turns out okay.

I'd still love to see Tuscany, though. The way you describe it sounds amazing.
