Vancouver Core by Laurazee Vancouver Core by Laurazee
Acrylic on Canvas, 36" wide x 30" tall.
Status: Sold

This is the Lonsdale Quay/Seabus View of Vancouver based (very liberally) on Syberpat's Vancity Core shot. The classic Vancouver elements are the sails of Canada Place as well as the Sears (Harbor Center) tower on the left. I took a lot of liberties with the overall architecture as well as with the colors, which I wanted to be crayon-bright for some reason.

Sad story on this one and a good lesson with acrylics: I was *almost done* back in early Dec. and was just sanding down some of those annoying acrylic bumps that develop. I decided I would rinse the dusty residue off faster in the sink: who knew the acrylic would peel off in SHEETS like that?

So this is actually the second version of the same painting since I accidentally and entirely rinsed off version #1, which I suspect was a cosmic statement that it just wasn't good enough or something. Anyway, here it is, repainted, recolored, and now I can go on to the next, whatever that is.

Vancouver Core by *Laurazee is a richly colored, wobbly bit of fun. It has an almost animated quality about it -- in the sense that you expect it to start moving. ( Suggested by Sventine and Featured by zeruch )

Congratz on the DD! This is really an excellent view and SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING than the photo you used as a reference. I don't know how the photog could have made their photo more flat, bland and essentially anonymous. (Oddly I noticed that on both the pages I've noticed that you used their photo as a ref - they didn't even comment about it! I'd be soooo honoured!) I love your use of colour and fractalline elements.

I have noticed tho that my photos of Vancouver generally do not do the reality any justice. Could be the GREY! LOL! :D

After travelling and living in much brighter places in Asia especially, I had a hard time getting into BC's beauty again since it is often so dark and gloomy and so NORTHERN!!! LOL! I remember being on Wreck some decades ago while I was visiting from my home in Japan and just being so shocked that our colours are so washed out, literally and figuratively speaking! hehe

This is a lovely piece, quirky and wonderful, just like Vancouver. I particularly love the use of colour.
`Laurazee, I'm a high school student working on an English project that requires me to find a piece of artwork of Vancouver to use with a poem and I would love to feature this image. May I copy the large view? You will be fully credited in the assignment if I may. If this is not possible, no problem. If it is, please let me know and I will be very grateful. Thank you for your time.

I am sure that I have seen this painting before. Maybe some years ago when I was actually in Vancouver. I came to your page because of your article on being 8 and recognized the style of your paintings instantly.

I can't wait to be a Vancouverite again, your painting reminisces my feelings of summers there.

Thanks! :peace:  :thanks: I'm pleased that my style is as recognizable as the scene. And yes, I agree: summers in Vancouver are pretty sublime. Winters, well. That's another story. I don't think a single one of my paintings features a rainy November!

Thank you - I completely appreciate your comment on that because I did try to distort actual buildings and if a real Vancouver-dweller recognizes that, then I am pleased.

I've been grumbling about all the new architecture in Van lately, though. So little seems distinctive anymore: all the same green-white-gray boxes. Nothing unique enough to paint. I fret about the future of our skyline.

Yes I agree. They have planned lots of new skyscrapers recently like the Shangri-la (which is almost done). Heard that it may ruin the Van Skyline because it might block the mountains or something. The "Vancouverism" building style is starting to lost my interest too because like you said... the same green-white-gray boxes.
